Things feminism isn’t based on:

 • Demonising men
 • Declaring women are superior

A disease that attacks his brain, heart, and testicles… I think Byron wrote about that.

Carlos Andrés Gómez - What’s Genocide

This is AMAZING.

their high school principal
told me I couldn’t teach
poetry with profanity
so I asked my students,
“Raise your hand if you’ve heard of the Holocaust.”
in unison, their arms rose up like poisonous gas
then straightened out like an SS infantry
“Okay. Please put your hands down.
Now raise your hand if you’ve heard of the Rwandan genocide.”
blank stares mixed with curious ignorance
a quivering hand out of the crowd
half-way raised, like a lone survivor
struggling to stand up in Kigali
“Luz, are you sure about that?”
“No.”
“That’s what I thought.”

“Carlos—what’s genocide?”

they won’t let you hear the truth at school
if that person says “fuck”
can’t even talk about “fuck”
even though a third of your senior class
is pregnant.

I can’t teach an 18-year-old girl in a public school
how to use a condom that will save her life
and that of the orphan she will be forced
to give to the foster care system—
“Carlos, how many 13-year-olds do you know that are HIV-positive?”

“Honestly, none. But I do visit a shelter every Monday and talk with
six 12-year-old girls with diagnosed AIDS.”
while 4th graders three blocks away give little boys blowjobs during recess
I met an 11-year-old gang member in the Bronx who carries
a semi-automatic weapon to study hall so he can make it home
and you want me to censor my language

“Carlos, what’s genocide?”

your books leave out Emmett Till and Medgar Evers
call themselves “World History” and don’t mention
King Leopold or diamond mines
call themselves “Politics in the Modern World”
and don’t mention Apartheid

“Carlos, what’s genocide?”

you wonder why children hide in adult bodies
lie under light-color-eyed contact lenses
learn to fetishize the size of their asses
and simultaneously hate their lips
my students thought Che Guevara was a rapper
from East Harlem
still think my Mumia t-shirt is of Bob Marley
how can literacy not include Phyllis Wheatley?
schools were built in the shadows of ghosts
filtered through incest and grinding teeth
molded under veils of extravagant ritual

“Carlos, what’s genocide?”

“Roselyn, how old was she? Cuántos años tuvo tu madre cuando se murió?”

“My mother had 32 years when she died. Ella era bellísima.”

…what’s genocide?

they’ve moved from sterilizing “Boriqua” women
injecting indigenous sisters with Hepatitis B,
now they just kill mothers with silent poison
stain their loyalty and love into veins and suffocate them

…what’s genocide?

Ridwan’s father hung himself
in the box because he thought his son
was ashamed of him

…what’s genocide?

Maureen’s mother gave her
skin lightening cream
the day before she started the 6th grade

…what’s genocide?

she carves straight lines into her
beautiful brown thighs so she can remember
what it feels like to heal

…what’s genocide?
…what’s genocide?

“Carlos, what’s genocide?”

“Luz, this…
this right here…

is genocide.”

You know, I actually like the way my legs feel after I’ve shaved? It’s all smooth and nice… I don’t mind this slight mutilation at all.

“Gentlemen, once you’ve graduated from college and are well into your 20s, I encourage you to hit the singles scene and try to find a woman your age who can cook, manage her personal finances and has both the know-how and motivation to properly maintain a household. You’ll have better luck (and probably more fun) searching for nickels on a busy interstate. Now, before any female readers shout “misogynist,” think for a moment — the standard I’m imposing is no more sexist than the one being mourned by Hymowitz. Women, for all of their successes and achievements in the last 40 years, still want a man who’s ambitious, driven and capable of taking charge of his life and his relationships, because that’s what women have looked for in a man since the dawn of time. Well, guess what? What we look for in a woman hasn’t changed a whole lot either. We want someone who can support us emotionally, be a mother to our children and can keep the cave tidy while we’re out hunting woolly mammoths. Spending my free time drinking and playing Wii isn’t going to make me president any sooner than being chained to a desk 80 hours a week is going to allot you the necessary time to help our kids learn how to read.”

Where Have The Good Women Gone? - AskMen.

What? No. Just… NO.

This is the most idiotic, ridiculous thing I’ve heard. Because a woman now has to *not only* be good at cooking, cleaning, and raising a family, she ALSO has to be educated and career driven and able to support herself lest she be dubbed a golddigger.

Not to mention you’re completely erasing what most women (at least feminist women, whom I assume this is addressed to) are more accurately looking for in a guy - That is, it’s all different and completely varied. But mostly, we’re not looking for some self absorbed douchefuck who thinks he’s gotten screwed over because he can no longer find women out there to be subservient to him.

There are plenty of women out there who are perfectly happy with being a housewife. Once I shit out this kid, I’ll be one.

And then you know what? After that, I’m going to get a job and be the main breadwinner while my husband takes a few years off and is a househusband.

Because what *I* looked for in a man was someone who was willing to cooperatively start and raise a family with me, who had good morals and a similar outlook on life, and wasn’t completely inept when it came to housework because “that’s a womans job.”

We BOTH cook, we BOTH clean, we BOTH work, and we BOTH go to school.

And fuck you for thinking women are so stupid that just because they’re career motivated they don’t also know how to cook and clean - What, our wee little brains can’t handle it?

Oh and a big ole hearty fuck you to that last line. Why can’t you be the one raising the family while I’m president?

You, ma’am, are my hero… heroine.

Yes! Thank you, very much.

After I first read this, I offered a close male friend of mine a hypothetical. In the future, in the case that he chooses to marry a woman and start a family and they’ve the means to support such a lifestyle, would he rather his wife stay home and care for the children? He made me quite proud when he added he believed that one parent, of either gender, should be home with the children.

It’s not the lifestyle I would pick because of where I grew up, I’m most familiar with families with two working parents. But that does sound nice, to have the option to have one parent at home while the kids are young.
